Remember my earlier post on the Dog Whisperer in May? Well, I thought I'll share with you an exercise tip from Cesar Millan which my humans have tried out on me. If you've watched the Dog Whisperer series, you'll see that a recurring them e in rehabilitating dogs is exercise. As the daily walk is paramount, Cesar introduces some tools such as skates and bicyles (for the human, not the dog) to add intensity and variety to the walk with the dog.
We tried out the bicyle tip so that I could get a good run during our weekend walks. In Malaysia, there are very few parks which allows dogs. Certainly, there are no dedicated dog parks where we can run freely. So, my humans decided to give this a go. Mum, who is on foot, gets the leash first as we get the "poo and pee" business out the way. Towards the end of the walk, dad, who is on the bike takes over.
Initially, my humas were apprehensive as they weren't sure how I would react to the bike. So, they found a quiet road to test it out. I admit, I didn't take to it like duck to water at first. I tried to go as far as possible from the wheels. But, after a couple of times, I got used to it and began to enjoy the run. I wasn't the only one who enjoyed it as my neighbours were quite amused (and impressed) at the sight of dad on the bike and me running beside him. I guess they don't see many beagles doing that.
The only problem with this is that poor mum has to walk back home by herself as dad & I speed off. But, she doesn't mind coz she loves me :-)

Hi, Kess!
Glad to see that you enjoyed your running with a bike thing!
I will tell my mom about it. Maybe we can try it! I let you know how it goes, ok?
Kisses and hugs

Lorenza,
Look forward to reading about it. I think you'll look really cute running with a bike!
Good job! This takes quite a bit of h-man & pooch coordination. We are impressed. What great exercise.

Running with a bike sounds like so much fun! You and your Dad did very well!

You look fabulous! Glad it worked out. It's far too easy for us beagles to lose our figures--being as we are totally oriented toward food! I would love that since I love to fun--except my mom doesn't have a bike.
love & wags,
River
Look at you go, Kess! You're going to have to eat more treats to keep up your strength if you continue to bike!
Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch
That's so cool! So did you run faster than your dad can cycle?
Waah! see that you really have a good time eh kess! I've something for you at my place, come get it! Thanks!
Hi Kess,
Don't be sad about having only a few parks in M'sia that's dog friendly, because the situation S'pore isn't much better either. Sighs.
I can see that you really enjoy running beside a bike. I wonder how you do that, because I'm so afraid of that two wheeled monster. It seem as though they are gonna roll over me!

we have tried to attempt this exercise too, but my lousy owner can't control the chaos situation and once i pulled, she nearly fall over...
Cool !!! Im not sure if this work for us....we might drag mom all the way back home instead of her riding the bike. hahhaaha!!
slurpy licks,
BenBen
Ooooo I need to tell my human to do that! It looks like lots of fun! Maybe next time your mom can skate with you and your dad can take the pictures!
Slurp!

Kess, you look like a natural with the bike!
I've taken Diesel out with the bike and he was a little scared about the wheels at first, but then did fine. I, however, was scared the whole time that if something happened and I fell the bike might land on the beagle.
I like rollerblading with the boys lots better because I'm closer to the ground and if something gets crazy I can just dive onto the grass and I won't run over a beagle. I've never been brave enough to try both beagles at the same time like Cesar.
Keep up the good work and have fun! I wish wish wish you could come over and play with us at our dog park!
The bike looks like great fun. Beware of Cesar Milan, though: a lot of animal behaviorialists have come out strongly against his training techniques.
Hi Kathrn & Ari, Thanks for your word of caution. As humans to our beloved dogs, we only want what;s best for our canines. I realise that Cesar is a controversial figure with his fair share of supporters and detractors. The key thing is for us to exercise our judgement and adopt the good practices which are suitable for our canine. Personally, I've learnt some valuable tips (eg. calm leadership & exercise tips) from Cesar's shows when I lived in Bangkok. We don't get his program in M'sia.
