If dogs are carnivorous, why do I like carrots?

It's strange but true. I love carrots...and apples...and guava...and the list goes on and on for almost all types of fruits and vegetables...

In fact, one of my favourite sounds at home is the sound of the cutting board. Wherever I am at home, I will quickly patter over to the kitchen when I hear mum cutting up stuff on the board. Because I know that I have to sit before being fed, I will sit and look at mum eagerly, hoping that I'll get a reward for my patience. Sometimes, she'll say "No, Not for you." But if I am lucky...she'll walk out of the kitchen with a goody for me. She makes me sit again. I'm not sure what her obsession with "Sit" is, but hey, I'll even do pawstands if I get to eat! I try not to look at the juicy carrot whilst mum tests out my willpower with the "Wait" command.

Happiness is when she says "OK". I'll trot into the dining room with my prized carrot and settle down to enjoy the fruits of my labour. Hey, all that sitting and waiting is hard work.
It doesn't take long before I chomp it all away. It's the same with apples. Run into the kitchen when I hear mum at work. Sit patiently.

Sit again in the dining room, with a tortured look, staring mournfully at the apple which is just a few steps away...
Finally, after what seems like eternity, I get to chomp on the sweet, sweet apple. Bliss!

P.S. Does anyone have an answer why dogs like to eat fruits and vegetables and carrots?

I don't know, but H-Mom gave me a hunk of cucumber and I was NOT impressed. CUCUMBER? How about a T-Bone?

I know lots of doggies who love veggies, esp. carrots. I've never had one--it looks like a big orange biscuit. What does it taste like? One of my brothers eats pickles which I think is disgusting. I'm with Booker--give me a steak bone.

Hi kess, I think you have aquired the taste of carrots and apples from younger days or maybe you are smart enough to ask for a balance diet like your mum and dad. One of my niece also blend some carrots, green apples and some green tea powder for her dogs' meals...

Cheers.

I am definately a fruit and vegetable kind of dog. Diesel on the other hand turns his nose up at all of it, including carrots. My mum does the same thing to us with kitchen food. We sit patiently and if we're lucky she calls us into another room and treats us to what she may be cooking/cutting/etc. after we sit or do various other tricks to entertain her. I'm lucky I like all the healthy stuff because I get more treats than Diesel... arooooo! I even like eating mulberries from the neighbood tree on our walk.

Hi Kess - Hello from Minnesota (US)

I love fruits and veggies, too! My dad shares his lettuce with me every morning when he's preparing his lunchbox sandwiches. If I'm real lucky I also get a little turkey. My new brother, Oliver, won't eat lettuce, although we haven't tried carrots with him yet. I'll eat pretty much ANYthing!

Woof,
Gus

Hi, Kess-
Dogs aren't carnivores: they're actually omnivores like people. Ari really loves blueberries, green beans, and dried mango. I bet the two of you would be fun in a produce market together!

I like carrots too. And apples..and honeydew melon, and durians...hmm...maybe we just like to eat what humans eat, that's why.
