Whenever my humans take me for a walk, they cannot afford to day-dream. They know the power of the beagle NOSE. That's right, I have the ability to sniff out the smelliest, moldiest food stuff tucked in between leaves, grass, you name it...
Just this evening, I managed to snatch a piece of bone on the road. Mum didn't even know what hit her until she heard me chomping the bone. She immediately put her hand into my mouth and attempted to take it. Hah...I managed to outwit her and she only got half it. I tell you she was not happy judging from the exclamations of "YUCKS, EEWW..." and "NAUGHTY GIRL"! A few weeks back, I found the remains of a corn cob and was happily carrying it in my mouth for a couple of seconds before mum finally realised what was in my mouth. She made me drop it...Shucks...
Oh well, us beagles are partial to food, you know. So, no day-dreaming when walking us, OK?

The Power of Coonhound Nose: one day Booker lunged for a sliver of pizza. OMG ... yuck ewwwwww flewwwyyyyyy ... he spat it out soooooo fast. It was covered in fire ants! The ants were in his mouth, in his nose, all over his jowls. Poor pup -- he was rubbing his face all over the pavement trying to get rid of the ants, FORGET about the pizza! He has never touched a scrap of food on the ground since.
hallo kess,
is nice to meet you
Yeah, it's amazing. I put a pan of food on top of the refrigerator and all the noses are suddenly in the air pinpointing it. The worst I've had is mice in the mouth. I see a tail hanging out (you'd think they were cats) and know that eeeyew yuck I have to get it out. Usually they give it up...stay safe Kess!! Booker & fireants---oweeee.
love & wags,
River
We don't think this is a beagle only trait as we are quuite good at it also(unless caught like you) Love A+A
Hi, Kess!
Being short, you can imagine I always have my nose on the ground! I've found many things on the street but I've never tried to eat them! and my mom is grateful for that!
Kisses and hugs
Lorenza
Hmm... What a great tip. However, don't have the heart to try that out intentionally on Kess. Kess' mama
Hi Pacco, Thanks for dropping by my blog.
River, Rats...Eeww! Rusky, my gramps' mixed terrier was a teriffic rat catcher. Mum is glad I didn't follow in Rusky's footsteps.
A&A, Definitely a doggie trait then!
Oh Lorenza, You're such a good dog. Mum wishes I'm like you.
Kess...the hooman will understand it if their nose manage to touch the ground like us....they might fight for it too. Hahaha ~!!!
Ben Ben, My human is constantly amazed how I can walk with my nose to the ground all the time...
As Lorenza, I never ate the things I found in the street! Nose on the ground all the time!

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean! Always an eye (or ear) on the beagles while walking.
I kind of panic when I hear the bone chomp sound and rush to get it from them no matter how yucky. I'm always afraid they will choke or it will tear their insides if they swallow it. I get mad at people who drop their chicken bones in the picnic areas at parks because of the dogs getting to them. We have to avoid the picnic areas.
